Privacy Policy
Last updated October 2026 · The Innovations Group — Hopp
Your privacy matters to us. This policy explains, in plain language, what information Hopp collects through its mobile app and website, how it is used, and the rights you have over it.
Who we are
Hopp is a product of The Innovations Group, 25 Leeuwkop Rd, Sunninghill, Sandton, 2157, South Africa. We are the responsible party for the personal information described in this policy. You can reach us at info@hoppevents.co.za or +27 62 697 5859.
What this policy covers
This policy explains what information the Hopp mobile app and the hoppevents.com website collect, why, and the choices you have. It should be read with our Terms of Use. We process personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).
The Hopp app
You do not need an account to use the Hopp app, and the app does not ask for your name, email address or phone number.
- Location. If you allow it, the app uses your location on your phone to show your area and how far events are from you. Your location is not sent to or stored by Hopp. To show the name of your area, your phone’s own location service (Apple or Google) converts your coordinates into a place name.
- Bookmarks, filters and settings. Events you save, the categories you filter by and your appearance setting are stored only on your phone.
- Your vibes. The categories you pick in “Your vibes” are stored only on your phone and are used to show those events first on Home. They are never sent to Hopp. You can change them any time in Settings.
- Recent searches. Your last few searches are kept only on your phone so you can repeat them quickly, and you can clear them in Search. This list is never sent to Hopp; it is separate from the anonymous search words described under usage statistics below, which you can switch off.
- Reminders. If you allow notifications, reminders for events you bookmark are scheduled on your phone. We do not send marketing notifications without your permission.
- Anonymous usage statistics. To understand how Hopp is used, the app adds one to simple totals, such as how many people opened the app today and how many times an event was viewed, saved, shared or had its tickets opened. It also records the words typed into search and how many events matched. These totals contain no name, account, device identifier, location or IP address, and cannot be linked to you. You can switch this off at any time in the app under Settings › Anonymous usage stats.
- Weekend picks and calendar. Your Weekend picks setting is stored only on your phone, and Weekend picks are scheduled on your phone. When you add an event to your calendar, the app opens your phone's own calendar; Hopp does not read your calendar or contacts.
- Followed categories. If you follow a category, your phone subscribes to that category's notification topic through Google Firebase Cloud Messaging, which uses a push token for your device to deliver the notification. Hopp sends one message per category and does not store who follows which category. You can unfollow at any time in Settings.
- Update notices. To tell you when a newer version of Hopp is available, the app asks Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iPhone) for the latest version. Only the app’s own identifier is sent, never anything about you.
- App integrity checks. To protect Hopp from fake apps and abuse, the app asks Google Play Integrity (Android) or Apple App Attest (iPhone) to confirm it is the genuine Hopp app. These checks do not identify you, and Hopp does not receive personal information from them.
- Event and place information. The app downloads public event and place listings from our database. These requests are handled by Google Firebase, which processes standard technical information such as your IP address to deliver them.
The website
- Submitting an event. When you submit an event, we collect the event details you enter and the contact details you provide (such as a name, email address and phone number) so we can review the listing and contact you about it.
- Ratings. When you rate a place we record the rating without your name. Your browser remembers that you have rated it, so the same rating is not counted twice.
- Preferences. Your light or dark theme choice is stored in your browser.
- Hopp Partners marketplace. If you create an account (with your email and a password, or with Google sign-in), we keep your email address and the profile you add, such as a business or tribe name, description, contact details and photos. When you send an enquiry to a vendor we store your name, phone number, email address (if signed in) and the event details you enter, and pass them to that vendor by email. Tribe membership, join requests, posts, comments and reports you make are stored with your account. Searches on the marketplace are recorded without your name so we can improve results.
- Analytics. The marketplace uses Google Analytics to understand how pages are used, for example how many enquiries are sent. It uses cookies and records information such as pages viewed, device type and approximate location derived from your IP address.
- Hosting. The website is hosted by Vercel and its data is stored with Google Firebase. Like any website, these providers process technical information such as your IP address and browser type to deliver pages securely.
How we use information
- To show events, activities and places, and to let you save and share them.
- To review and publish event submissions and to contact submitters about their listing.
- To understand, in anonymous totals, which features and events people use, so we can improve Hopp.
- To keep the Platform secure, prevent abuse and fix problems.
- To meet our legal obligations.
Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run Hopp (such as Google Firebase, Google Analytics, Vercel and EmailJS, which delivers enquiry emails to vendors) under appropriate data processing terms, or where the law requires it. Enquiries are shared with the vendor you contact, and what you post in a tribe is visible to its members. When you tap a ticket link, you leave Hopp for the ticketing provider (such as Quicket, Computicket or Ticketpro), whose own privacy policy then applies.
How long we keep it
We keep event submissions, enquiries and account information for as long as it is needed for the purpose it was collected, or as required by law, and then delete or anonymise it. Information stored only on your phone or in your browser stays there until you delete the app, clear its data or clear your browser storage.
Your rights
Under POPIA you may ask us to delete your marketplace account and you may ask to access the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and object to its processing. Email info@hoppevents.co.za and we will respond within a reasonable time. If you are not satisfied, you may complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa at inforegulator.org.za.
Children
Hopp is intended for people aged 13 and over. Users between 13 and 17 need the consent of a parent or guardian to create an account. If you believe a child has given us personal information without consent, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We use industry standard technical and organisational measures to protect personal information against loss, misuse and unauthorised access. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information and will notify you and the Information Regulator of a breach where the law requires it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed. Material changes will be communicated through the Platform.
